C. Dosho, I. Wiessler, Konmasa

  • Contemporary quilts, Multi-fiber textile works, Mixed-media works
  • Germany, Japan

Chiaki Dosho and Isabelle Wiessler have deepened their friendship since performing together at Quilt National ’19. Though they live on different continents, their artistic dialogue has continued to grow through shared ideas and mutual inspiration.

Chiaki lives in Japan. After studying and teaching quilting, she pursued further studies in fine art at Musashino Art University to deepen her knowledge. She primarily works with antique Japanese kimono fabrics, reconnecting with her cultural roots while reinterpreting tradition through a contemporary lens. Isabelle is a French-German fibre artist based in Staufen, Germany, where she works full-time in her studio. With a background in fine art, she has developed a distinctive practice that bridges fibre art and contemporary painting, exploring color, materiality, and surface.

Konmasa is a young conceptual artist based in Japan. After studying photography in New York, he began transforming the everyday experience of wearing tank tops into conceptual art. For the past twelve years, he has expressed this ongoing exploration through video, questioning identity, repetition, and daily rituals.

Together, the three artists form a constellation of practices rooted in textile, image, and lived experience.

EXHIBITION

Threads of Breath: 3 voices from East to West

Town

Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines

Exhibition venue

Espace des Tisserands, Place des Tisserands, 68160 Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines

Year

2026

Chiaki, Isabelle, and Konmasa communicate through thread, fibre, and color—a language that exists beyond words. Despite geographical distance and the absence of a shared spoken language, the three artists have formed a strong bond. Their collaboration demonstrates how textile-based practices transcend borders, revealing shared concerns while honoring distinct creative processes. For Carrefour, they will create new works inspired by one another. Dialogue, observation, and transformation will unfold through textile processes, allowing each artist’s practice to evolve in response to the others. Each brings a distinct approach and visual vocabulary. Chiaki presents mixed-media works that layer textures and meanings, exploring subtle relationships between structure and emotion. Drawing on antique kimono fabrics, her pieces embody memory and material history. Isabelle unveils painted quilts in which color, rhythm, and surface become spaces for contemplation. Her work navigates the threshold between painting and textile, where gesture and material interact in quiet intensity. Konmasa presents a tank top inscribed with mandala-like Japanese characters, accompanied by video. By extending the textile object into performative and time-based dimensions, he transforms an everyday garment into a conceptual and meditative device. East and West meet through thread, yet each artist animates the medium differently. What distinguishes them is not distance, but their individual relationship to people, fabric, and the world. Together, they create a shared space where textile becomes a site of encounter.
