Patchwork Gilde Deutschland

  • Contemporary quilts
  • Germany

The Patchwork Gilde Deutschland is the central organization representing quilt and patchwork artists in Germany and one of the most established guilds within the European textile art community. Founded to promote excellence in craftsmanship while encouraging artistic innovation, the Guild has evolved into a dynamic platform for exchange, education, and professional presentation. At the heart of its mission lies the conviction that patchwork and quilt constitute a fully recognized artistic medium. Through juried exhibitions, thematic challenges, and curated presentations, members are encouraged to situate their work within broader aesthetic and conceptual frameworks.

Education and dialogue are fundamental pillars of the Guild’s activities. Workshops, lectures, and study groups provide opportunities for advanced practitioners to refine their techniques and critically reflect on their artistic development. International collaborations and traveling exhibitions further expand this dialogue, positioning German quilt artists within a global textile network. By organizing high-level juried competitions and publishing selected works, the Guild offers professional platforms that reinforce the artistic legitimacy of quiltmaking. It stands for a productive balance between continuity and change—honoring the discipline and rigor of masterful quiltmaking while embracing the freedom and conceptual openness of contemporary textile art.

EXHIBITION

Tradition to Modernity XIV

Town

Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines

Exhibition venue

Eglise Sainte Madeleine, 112 Rue Mal de Lattre de Tassigny, 68160 Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines

Year

2026

The Patchwork Gilde Deutschland proudly presents the new edition of its juried challenge Tradition to Modernity. Held every three years, the competition invites members to submit their most accomplished quilts created within the previous three years. The open call—without thematic or size restrictions—encourages the widest possible range of artistic expression and reflects the diversity of contemporary quilt practice. From the submitted works, 36 pieces were selected by a distinguished jury comprising Marion Caspers, Monika Hülsebusch, and Hilde van Schaardenburg. Their selection represents not only exceptional technical standards but also the breadth of aesthetic and conceptual approaches within today’s German quilt scene. Tradition to Modernity embodies the dynamic dialogue between artisanal heritage and contemporary innovation. The exhibited works demonstrate how textile art continues to evolve: from meticulously crafted quilts grounded in historical patterns and precise craftsmanship to experimental works that explore unconventional materials, free compositions, and contemporary visual language. Color, structure, and textile surface function as essential compositional elements. In many pieces, traditional techniques such as piecing and quilting are reinterpreted through a modern lens, while others challenge established definitions of the quilt altogether. The exhibition highlights both mastery and creative risk-taking. Beyond their technical refinement, the selected works reveal conceptual depth and a confident engagement with the medium. Together, they affirm the vitality of quiltmaking as a contemporary art form—firmly rooted in tradition, yet unmistakably oriented toward the future.
