Barbara Lange

Over the past six years, Barbara Lange has developed a powerful series titled Embarrassing Mothers. The project is dedicated to strong women whose lives were shaped by the tension between societal expectations and personal conviction. These are mothers who were perceived—by their children, their communities, or even themselves—as unconventional, difficult, or “embarrassing.” Yet it is often precisely these women who fostered resilience and independence in the next generation. The series portrays historical and cultural figures such as Michelle Obama, Karl Marx’s mother, Lady Jane Ellenborough, and Stephen Hawking’s mother. By bringing these diverse biographies together, Lange reflects on the complexity of motherhood and the subtle dynamics of influence and legacy. The works are also informed by the artist’s extensive teaching experience in China, where she has collaborated with vocational schools and art academies. Encounters across cultures have deepened her interest in how motherhood, authority, and personal freedom are perceived differently around the world. Through portrait-like quilt compositions, Embarrassing Mothers becomes a meditation on strength, vulnerability, cultural expectations, and the quiet yet profound impact of women whose influence is often misunderstood or underestimated.
