Australian textile artist, teacher, and curator Brenda Gael Smith creates textile paintings using a rich palette of hand-dyed fabrics, enhanced by extensive, textural stitching that demonstrates the transformative power of stitch. Abstraction is a persistent and defining force in her work. Working improvisationally, Brenda captures the essence of her subjects to convey a sense of wonder for the natural world and a strong connection to place. Her teaching focuses on freeform piecing, color, and design fundamentals to foster enjoyment and encourage creative momentum. In 2025, Brenda received the Rajah Award for her outstanding contribution to Australian quilting.
