Quilt National

Quilt National is presented by The Dairy Barn Arts Center and features some of the best art quilts in the world. For over 40 years, this exhibition has continually renewed forms of experimentation and development in the art of fabric, while redefining what a quilt is.Quilt National is the exhibition that has helped legitimize art quilts. Today, artists choose both traditional and non-traditional materials and use shapes other than the standard rectangle. They still respect traditional methods of assembly and quilting while pushing boundaries by creating from their personal artistic vision. At each Quilt National exhibition, it is fascinating to see how artists perceive what is important in their world and beyond.

The exhibition “Connected in Red” is a unique project of the Dutch Quiltersgilde. Red was the color chosen because of the logo of the Quiltersgilde. All members were invited to take part in this challenge and over one hundred members opted in. The rules were simple: make a quilt measuring 80 by 100 centimeters (w x h) using the fat quarter of red fabric that every participant received. By keeping the rules simple we hope to be able to present a very diverse collection of work from our members. The submissions vary in style from art to contemporary as well as traditional quilts. In the midst of this diversity of styles, one thing remains constant – the use of the same red fabric. ‘Connected in Red’ is more than just an exhibition; it is a celebration of community, camaraderie, and the shared love of quilting that unites members of the Dutch Quiltersgilde. As you explore each quilt, you’ll witness the power of art to bring people together and inspire connections that transcend borders and boundaries.
