International Quilt Museum & Carrefour

  • Contemporary quilts, Modern quilts, Amish quilts
  • Europe

Amish Reimagined is an international project born from the collaboration between the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln (Nebraska, USA) and Carrefour – The European Quilt Show. A world-renowned institution dedicated to quilt art, the International Quilt Museum preserves and studies one of the most significant quilt collections worldwide. Among its treasures are remarkable historic Amish quilts, celebrated for their graphic strength, masterful use of color, and timeless modernity. By opening its collection to this artistic dialogue, the museum affirms its commitment to keeping textile heritage alive beyond its purely historical dimension. For this project, nine European artists — Janet Twinn, Elina Lusis-Grinberga, Romana Cerna, Michèle Samter, Cosabeth Parriaud, Helene Hein, Isabelle Wiessler, Teresa Gai and Paola Machetta — were invited to engage in a creative conversation with these historic works. Coming from diverse cultural backgrounds, they share a rigorous approach to the quilt as a contemporary artistic medium. By placing a historic work alongside its contemporary reinterpretation, Amish Reimagined highlights the vitality of a visual language capable of transcending time. Through this collaboration between museum and contemporary practice, the project affirms that textile heritage is not static: it inspires, engages in dialogue, and continually reinvents itself.

In Amish Reimagined, each invited artist selected a historic Amish quilt from the collection of the International Quilt Museum as the starting point for a contemporary reinterpretation. The exhibition is built on a strong curatorial principle: presenting the historic work alongside its new counterpart, creating a direct dialogue between tradition and today’s artistic vision. Each contemporary piece follows precise shared guidelines: a format of 130 × 130 cm, the exclusive use of solid fabrics — hand-dyed fabrics permitted — and a clearly identifiable reference to the colors, composition, or quilting of the chosen quilt. Far from restricting creativity, these parameters act as a catalyst. They encourage artists to engage with the formal essence of Amish quilts: their restrained palette, the power of expansive color fields, the rigor of geometric structure, and the almost meditative intensity of their quilting. Each of the nine works offers a personal interpretation in which tradition becomes both a space for reflection and a field for experimentation. By placing historic and contemporary works side by side, Amish Reimagined highlights the enduring modernity of this visual language. Through their bold minimalism and masterful use of color, Amish quilts naturally resonate with contemporary aesthetic concerns. More than a tribute, the project affirms that tradition is not static. It circulates, inspires, and transforms. The exhibition demonstrates that the quilt moves through time not as an object of the past, but as a living medium capable of reinvention while preserving its original spirit.
