Brenda Gael Smith was born in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and now lives and works on the land of the Darkinjung people in Copacabana, Australia. She creates textile paintings from a rich palette of hand-dyed fabrics, enhanced by dense, textural stitching that reveals the transformative power of the stitch itself.
Abstraction is a persistent and compelling force in her practice. Working improvisationally, she distills the essence of her subjects to evoke a sense of wonder for the natural world and a deep connection to place.
In recent years, following the death of her husband from an aggressive brain tumor, Brenda’s work has expanded to embrace existential questions and the experience of grief. Her practice reflects a search for resilience and meaning: What life force animates and sustains us? How do we respond when circumstances drain our deepest reserves? How do we continue?
Through color, rhythm, and gesture, her textile paintings become meditations on vitality, endurance, and the sustaining power of creativity.
